What You Need to Know
• Rebel fighters abandoned Falam, Myanmar, in April after running out of ammunition during a military assault.
• The Myanmar military conducted over 2,500 air strikes and deployed around 1,000 troops in the six-month campaign.
• Following the fall of Falam, three additional towns in Chin State were captured by the military within weeks.

Rebel fighters in Myanmar, led by the Chin Brotherhood, surrendered the strategic border town of Falam in April after exhausting their ammunition. The town had been under opposition control for a year but fell after a six-month offensive by the Myanmar military, which included more than 2,500 air strikes and a ground assault involving approximately 1,000 troops. The capture of Falam is significant as it houses the only airport in Chin State and controls a key trade route to India. Following this loss, the military quickly claimed control of three more towns in Chin, solidifying its dominance in the northern part of the state. Salai William Chin, a member of the Chin Brotherhood, emphasized the importance of preserving their forces and protecting civilians while continuing the struggle against the military.

Why It Matters

The conflict in Myanmar has intensified since the military coup in 2021, leading to a complex struggle involving various ethnic armed groups and militias. The opposition had previously made significant gains in 2023 and 2024, capturing numerous towns from the military. However, a recent mass conscription effort by the military has bolstered its ranks, while devastating air campaigns have resulted in significant civilian casualties. The geopolitical landscape is further complicated by China’s involvement, as it has facilitated ceasefires and restricted arms supplies to certain groups, impacting the overall dynamics of the conflict.
