UNRWA warns of $5M in assets at risk after Israeli raid

UNRWA’s Qalandiya Training Center in occupied East Jerusalem, housing over $5 million in assets, was forcibly entered by Israeli security forces on August 25. The incursion resulted in damage and signs of looting, as reported by Roland Friedrich, director of UNRWA affairs in the West Bank. Following the entry, Israeli officials remained on-site to conduct renovations. The center, which was preparing to welcome 340 students for the new academic year, provides vocational training and has been a crucial facility for Palestinian refugees since its establishment in 1952. Friedrich emphasized that this was the last major UNRWA facility in East Jerusalem after several others were closed or seized. UNRWA has called for the protection of its assets and has raised concerns about the legal obligations of Israeli authorities regarding such incidents.

Why It Matters

The Qalandiya Training Center is significant as it represents UNRWA’s commitment to vocational education for Palestinian refugees, who face limited opportunities in the region. The center serves as a vital educational resource, providing training to hundreds of youth annually. This incident takes place amid increasing restrictions on UNRWA’s operations by Israeli authorities, further complicating the situation for Palestinian refugees. The International Court of Justice has reaffirmed Israel’s obligations to respect UN premises, highlighting the broader legal and humanitarian implications of such actions.
