Student dies by suicide using kit linked to Canadian poison seller

A first-year psychology student, Joshua Warner, tragically took his own life using poison he purchased online from Canadian seller Kenneth Law. The inquest revealed that Warner, 21, struggled with mental health issues, including ADHD, depression, and borderline personality disorder. He sourced the lethal substance through an online forum and spent approximately £40 on it. Warner’s death in January 2023 was one of 79 linked to Law, who has pleaded guilty to aiding suicide. A coroner noted that medical professionals could not have prevented Warner’s death, despite his father’s persistent efforts resulting in an assessment just weeks prior to the tragedy. Coroner Nicholas Walker expressed concerns about the mental health support available and highlighted the need for better systems to recognize and assist individuals in need.

Why It Matters

This case underscores the critical issue of mental health support access, particularly for young adults in academic environments. Warner’s death reflects broader concerns about the adequacy of mental health resources and the challenges families face in securing timely help. The involvement of online sellers like Kenneth Law in facilitating suicides raises questions about regulatory oversight and the responsibility of online platforms in preventing access to harmful substances. With 79 deaths linked to Law’s actions, this case highlights the urgent need for improved mental health interventions and stricter regulations on substance availability to prevent future tragedies.
