Major disruption expected over Bank Holiday weekend due to strikes

East Midlands Railway (EMR) has announced significant service reductions from London St Pancras due to a strike by RMT union members over safety concerns related to the Class 810 ‘Aurora’ trains. Passengers are advised to travel only if necessary during the Bank Holiday weekend, particularly on August 30 and 31. The strike coincides with planned disruptions on the East Coast Mainline, where no LNER trains will operate between King’s Cross and Peterborough on Sunday due to signalling upgrades. EMR expects long queues at stations like Nottingham and Sheffield as a result of the reduced schedule. The RMT’s grievances include issues with air-conditioning, door faults, and malfunctioning toilets on the affected trains, prompting the union to instruct drivers and train staff to refuse service until these problems are addressed.

Why It Matters

The ongoing strike highlights significant operational challenges within the UK’s railway system, particularly with newly introduced trains like the Class 810, which have experienced technical issues since their service launch in December 2025. This situation reflects broader concerns about rail safety and service reliability, impacting passenger travel plans during peak times such as Bank Holidays. The RMT’s actions underscore the union’s commitment to advocating for worker safety and passenger comfort, while EMR continues to engage with the union to resolve these disputes. The strike and subsequent service disruptions may also influence public perception of the rail service’s reliability and affect future ridership.
