What You Need to Know
• Rockstar Games previewed Grand Theft Auto 6 during an exclusive event hosted by Netflix on Thursday.
• The game, featuring protagonists Jason Duval and Lucia Camino, is set to launch on November 19, 2023.
• Investment bank Piper Sandler estimates that Grand Theft Auto 6 will sell 35 million copies by April 2027.

Rockstar Games, the developer behind the Grand Theft Auto franchise, provided an exclusive preview of Grand Theft Auto 6 during an event hosted by Netflix on Thursday. The 25-minute video showcased gameplay featuring the two main characters, Jason Duval and Lucia Camino, engaging in various heists while navigating the fictional state of Leonida, inspired by Florida. Originally scheduled for release in 2025, the game’s launch was delayed twice to allow developers more time to refine it. As anticipation builds, a U.S. Army unit in Georgia is offering active-duty soldiers a four-day pass to play the game in exchange for signing a reenlistment contract. Rockstar has acknowledged the emergence of spoilers online but urges fans to wait for the official release.

Why It Matters

The release of Grand Theft Auto 6 marks a significant event in the gaming industry, as it follows the highly successful Grand Theft Auto 5, which debuted in 2013. The anticipation for the new installment is heightened by the long wait of 13 years since the last release. With estimates suggesting that the game could sell 35 million copies by April 2027, it highlights the franchise’s enduring popularity and commercial potential. The collaboration between Netflix and Rockstar Games for the preview also reflects the increasing intersection of gaming and streaming platforms in reaching audiences.
