FDA approves pancreatic cancer drug that may extend patient survival

The Food and Drug Administration has approved daraxonrasib, a new oral medication for advanced pancreatic cancer, marking a significant advancement in treatment options for one of the most lethal cancers. This drug, marketed as Rasonque by Revolution Medicines, targets a mutated protein involved in tumor growth in over 90% of pancreatic cancer cases. In clinical trials, patients taking daraxonrasib experienced nearly double the survival time compared to those receiving traditional chemotherapy, with a median survival of 13.2 months versus 6.7 months. The medication will be priced at approximately $39,800 for a monthly supply. This breakthrough comes as pancreatic cancer remains difficult to detect and treat, with an estimated 67,000 new cases and over 52,000 deaths expected in the U.S. this year alone.

Why It Matters

Pancreatic cancer has historically been challenging to treat due to late-stage diagnosis and the complexity of its underlying biology. The introduction of daraxonrasib, which effectively targets the RAS mutations that drive many pancreatic tumors, represents a major shift in the approach to this disease. Previous treatments have struggled to yield significant results, contributing to a five-year survival rate of only 13%. The FDA’s expedited approval of this drug highlights the urgent need for more effective therapies in oncology, especially for cancers with limited treatment options. This development may also pave the way for future innovations targeting similar genetic mutations in other cancer types.
