More than a dozen newborn babies died in a tragic fire at the maternity ward of the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) hospital in Islamabad on August 26, 2026. The fire, which affected the third floor of the mother and child unit, has since been brought under control, with rescue teams working quickly to assist those injured, who have been moved to the intensive care unit. Out of the 15 infants present in the ward, only one was rescued. Parents of the deceased infants gathered outside the hospital, expressing their grief and sorrow. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has ordered an immediate investigation into the incident, while President Asif Ali Zardari emphasized the need for accountability and enhanced fire safety measures in hospitals to protect vulnerable patients, particularly newborns.

Why It Matters

This incident highlights critical issues surrounding hospital safety standards in Pakistan, especially in facilities caring for infants and mothers. Fires in medical settings can have devastating consequences, and previous incidents in Pakistan have raised concerns about inadequate fire safety protocols. The government’s response, including an inquiry and potential legal action, underscores the urgency of improving emergency preparedness in healthcare institutions. Historically, the lack of stringent safety measures has contributed to similar tragedies, emphasizing the need for systemic reforms to prevent future loss of life.
