A 34-year-old tree-trimming employee, Christopher Boone Crimmins, has been charged with second-degree manslaughter following the death of his coworker, Tyler Anthony Lynch, 26. The incident occurred in Apple Valley, Minnesota, when Crimmins was operating a hydraulic grapple while Lynch was on the ground clearing branches. According to a criminal complaint, the two were reportedly “messing around” with their shadows when Crimmins unintentionally maneuvered the grapple towards Lynch’s head, resulting in severe trauma. Lynch was found with significant injuries and pronounced dead at the scene. Crimmins, who has been charged with a felony count of manslaughter, is currently held at Dakota County Jail with bail set at either $40,000 without conditions or $20,000 with conditions.

Why It Matters

Workplace safety regulations are critical to preventing accidents and fatalities, especially in industries involving heavy machinery. The incident highlights the dangers associated with negligence and horseplay in high-risk work environments. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, there were 4,764 fatal work injuries reported in the United States in 2020, underscoring the importance of adhering to safety protocols. This case serves as a reminder of the potential consequences of disregarding safety measures and the legal ramifications that can follow workplace incidents resulting in injury or death.
