Syrian aviation industry shows signs of recovery amid regional conflicts

From the onset of Syria’s 14-year civil war until the fall of the Assad regime in 2024, the country’s airspace was largely closed to international airlines. The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) classified Syrian airspace as high risk in 2013, alerting airlines to the potential for missile fire. The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) subsequently mandated that U.S.-registered aircraft maintain a distance of at least 200 miles from Damascus, with a prohibition on flights in the region, a restriction extended through December 2028. As the Syrian aviation industry seeks to revive operations following the regime’s collapse, the nation has begun to attract airlines, aided by Turkish investments in new radar systems and the lifting of EU sanctions. Syrian Airlines resumed international flights, including to Saudi Arabia and Europe, as regional conflicts prompted airlines to reroute through Syrian airspace, despite the ongoing risks.

Why It Matters

The reopening of Syrian airspace marks a significant shift in the region’s aviation landscape following years of conflict. The FAA’s restrictions and ICAO warnings reflect the serious safety concerns that have historically plagued Syrian airspace. The renewed interest in flights over Syria indicates a recovery effort in the aviation sector, which has suffered amid the civil war. However, despite the increased airline activity, overall air traffic remains below pre-war levels, highlighting the lasting impact of the conflict on Syria’s aviation infrastructure and the broader implications for international air travel in volatile regions.
