US envoy clarifies Golan remarks and reaffirms Trump’s policy

The US ambassador to Turkey and special envoy to Syria and Iraq, Tom Barrack, has recently shifted his position on the Golan Heights, affirming the US’s recognition of the area as Israeli territory. In a statement to the Associated Press on Sunday, Barrack stated, “United States policy on the Golan was set by President Trump in 2019 and is unchanged,” contradicting his earlier comments in an interview where he referred to Israel’s control of the Golan Heights as an occupation against international law. This statement comes amid rising tensions following Israeli airstrikes on a military airfield in Syria, which Israel claimed was being prepared for Turkish troop deployment, a claim Turkey disputed. The Israeli annexation of the Golan Heights, conducted in 1981, has been deemed “null and void” by a UN Security Council resolution. Meanwhile, Syria continues to assert its claim to the territory.

Why It Matters

The status of the Golan Heights is a contentious issue in Middle Eastern politics, stemming from Israel’s capture of the territory during the Six-Day War in 1967 and subsequent annexation in 1981. UN Security Council Resolution 497, passed shortly after the annexation, declared it invalid, contributing to ongoing disputes over the region. The US recognition of the Golan Heights as Israeli territory under the Trump administration has further complicated international relations, particularly between Israel, Syria, and Turkey. The recent airstrikes and Barrack’s comments highlight the delicate balance of power and the potential for escalation in an already volatile region, as diplomatic negotiations continue regarding Israel’s military presence and territorial claims.
