Tropical Storm Moke forecast to bring up to 15 inches of rain in Hawaii

Tropical Storm Moke is projected to bring heavy rain and strong winds to Hawaii this weekend as it moves south of the islands, following the severe impacts of Hurricane Lala. As of midday Saturday, Moke had maximum sustained winds of 50 mph and is expected to strengthen. Although it is not predicted to make landfall, the storm will affect the Big Island on Saturday night and early Sunday, with other islands experiencing impacts early next week. The National Hurricane Center warns that Moke could cause life-threatening flooding and mudslides, particularly on the Big Island, where rainfall totals may reach 15 inches in some areas. Recent rainfall from Hurricane Lala, which caused significant damage due to gusts over 80 mph and over 3 feet of rain, has left the ground saturated, increasing the risk of further flooding.

Why It Matters

Hurricane Lala, which impacted Hawaii just a week prior, marked a significant event as it was the first hurricane to approach the islands since Hurricane Iniki in 1992. The current storm conditions are exacerbated by an El Niño climate pattern, which has been linked to warmer ocean waters that fuel tropical cyclone development. This phenomenon reduces vertical wind shear, allowing storms to intensify and avoid dissipation, thereby increasing the likelihood of an active hurricane season in the region. The potential for dangerous weather conditions highlights the vulnerability of Hawaii to tropical systems and the need for preparedness in the face of climate-related events.
