What You Need to Know
• Federal officials announced significant water cuts for California, Nevada, and Arizona due to Colorado River shortages.
• The Bureau of Reclamation’s plan mandates a reduction of 1.25 million acre-feet annually over two years.
• Arizona will face the largest cuts, while Mexico will reduce its water intake by 250,000 acre-feet.

On Friday, U.S. federal officials, including Andrea Travnicek, the Assistant Secretary for Water and Science at the U.S. Department of the Interior, announced substantial water cuts for California, Nevada, and Arizona due to the declining Colorado River. Under the Bureau of Reclamation’s plan, these states will collectively reduce their water usage by 1.25 million acre-feet each year for the next two years, with Arizona experiencing the most significant reductions. In addition, Mexico will decrease its water intake by 250,000 acre-feet as part of a treaty with the United States. The Colorado River is a crucial water source for approximately 35 million to 40 million people, and the current rules governing its use are set to expire in October, with no consensus reached among the seven states involved.

Why It Matters

The Colorado River has been under severe stress due to prolonged drought, climate change, and overuse, impacting millions of residents and agricultural sectors. The river’s two largest reservoirs, Lake Mead and Lake Powell, have reached their lowest levels in nearly seven decades, threatening water supply and hydroelectric power generation. The ongoing water cuts reflect the urgent need for cooperative management among the states sharing this vital resource, as they face increasing challenges related to water scarcity and climate variability.
