Pilot reports burn injuries after laptop fire on American Airlines flight

A laptop caught fire on American Airlines Flight 2398 on Friday, prompting the pilot to report injuries to four to five passengers, as communicated via air traffic control audio. The incident occurred while the flight, which originated in Atlanta and had 133 people on board, was landing at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport. The crew responded quickly and managed to contain the fire, and one passenger was treated and released after landing. American Airlines acknowledged the professionalism of the crew in handling the situation. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has been contacted for further comment on the incident.

Why It Matters

Lithium batteries, commonly used in laptops and other devices, pose significant fire risks on airplanes due to a phenomenon known as “thermal runaway,” which can occur from overheating, damage, or other factors. The FAA has established size limits for lithium batteries carried on flights to mitigate these risks, and there have been at least 56 reported incidents involving lithium batteries resulting in smoke, fire, or overheating on flights this year alone. Past incidents, such as an Alaska Airlines flight returning to Seattle in February due to an overheating power bank, highlight the ongoing challenges airlines face in managing battery safety in aviation.
