Oil tankers use dark mode to avoid Iranian attacks, increasing spill risk

Three oil spills are currently affecting the Persian Gulf and Gulf of Oman, amid escalating tensions surrounding the Strait of Hormuz. One spill has reached Iran’s Qeshm Island, likely originating from the Minoan Pioneer, a dry bulk ship struck by a projectile near Oman on August 3. Another spill occurred from the Caroline Bezengi tanker, which ran aground near an Omani marine nature reserve, spreading oil over an area of 400 to 500 square miles. Since March, there have been over 1,500 instances of ships turning off their navigation systems to avoid detection, increasing the risk of accidents and environmental damage. Experts caution that these unsafe practices could lead to further spills, with current containment measures reportedly only achieving 80% effectiveness for the Qeshm Island spill.

Why It Matters

The ongoing situation highlights the environmental risks of navigating the congested Strait of Hormuz, a vital chokepoint for global oil shipping. Oil tankers have been mandated to use transponders for safe navigation since 2004; however, the recent turn to “dark crossings” jeopardizes maritime safety. The region faces additional pressures from climate change, overfishing, and pollution, making any oil spill particularly disastrous. The Gulf’s delicate ecosystems, including its marine reserves, are already under threat, and significant spills could have long-lasting effects on biodiversity and local economies.
