Tropical Storm Moke forms as Hawaii prepares for additional rainfall

A new storm, Tropical Storm Moke, is expected to bring heavy rainfall and potential mudslides to Hawaii’s Big Island, which is still recovering from Hurricane Lala. Moke, which formed on Friday with winds of 45 mph, is anticipated to be weaker than Lala but will still deliver significant precipitation. Rain is forecasted to begin Saturday night, intensifying on Sunday and continuing into Monday, with expected totals ranging from 5 to 10 inches and possibly up to 15 inches in some areas. This rainfall poses risks of life-threatening flooding and mudslides, particularly in regions affected by the previous hurricane. Other Hawaiian Islands may see 1 to 3 inches of rain, with maximums of 5 inches.

Why It Matters

Hurricane Lala recently impacted Hawaii as a Category 1 storm, damaging over 100 homes and leaving thousands without power. It caused significant rainfall across the state, with some areas receiving more than 40 inches, exacerbating the risk of flooding and mudslides. The ongoing threat from Tropical Storm Moke underscores the vulnerability of the Hawaiian Islands to severe weather events, particularly as they recover from the devastation caused by Lala. Climate change has been linked to increasing storm intensity and frequency, making it crucial for residents and officials to be prepared for adverse weather conditions.
