Israel is blocking foreign assistance to the Lebanese army, says deputy PM

Israel is obstructing international support for the Lebanese army as it deploys in southern Lebanon under a US-backed framework agreement established in June between Lebanon and Israel. Deputy Prime Minister Tarek Mitri stated that multiple countries are willing to assist the Lebanese military, but Israel is resisting these efforts. The framework agreement aims for an Israeli withdrawal from certain Lebanese territories and the deployment of Lebanese forces in those areas, alongside the disarmament of armed groups like Hezbollah. However, ongoing Israeli attacks in southern Lebanon are complicating these deployments, with reports indicating that such actions have resulted in over 4,300 deaths and more than 12,000 injuries since March 2. The UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), present since 1978 to monitor security, is also facing challenges, with its mandate expiring at the end of this year.

Why It Matters

This situation is significant as it highlights the ongoing tensions between Israel and Lebanon, particularly regarding territorial disputes and military presence. The framework agreement is pivotal for regional stability, aiming to facilitate the Lebanese army’s authority in southern Lebanon after years of conflict and occupation. The presence of UNIFIL underscores the international community’s role in maintaining peace in the region. Israel’s resistance to support for the Lebanese army, coupled with its military actions, raises concerns about the potential for further violence and instability, affecting not only Lebanon but also broader regional security dynamics.
