Syria seeks closer ties with Pakistan amid Israeli strikes in the region

A day after Israeli airstrikes targeted northern Syria, Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Hassan al-Shaibani arrived in Pakistan for a historic visit, the first by a Syrian foreign minister in 17 years. During his meeting with Pakistani Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, the two leaders discussed enhancing bilateral relations and cooperation across various sectors. Al-Shaibani acknowledged Pakistan’s efforts in promoting regional peace and stability. This visit occurs amid a new alliance formed by Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey, which does not include Syria but shows support for the country. Meanwhile, Damascus condemned the Israeli strikes, asserting its commitment to high-level diplomacy and viewing the situation as an opportunity rather than a crisis.

Why It Matters

The recent airstrikes by Israel, which targeted a military airport south of Aleppo, reflect ongoing tensions in the region, particularly concerning Israeli interests in Syria. Historically, Israel has been concerned about the influence of regional powers such as Turkey, especially in light of Ankara’s previous military incursions into Syria and its evolving relationship with the Assad regime. The new alliance involving Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey suggests a strategic shift in regional dynamics, with these countries seeking to counterbalance Israel’s actions. As Syria strengthens ties with these nations, it highlights a broader trend of diplomatic engagement among countries that are wary of Israeli military operations in the region.
