What You Need to Know
• Venezuela is currently exporting over 500,000 barrels per day of oil to the United States.
• U.S. Under Secretary of Energy Kyle Haustveit stated that Venezuela’s total oil output is approximately 1.25 million barrels per day.
• Venezuelan state oil company PDVSA aims to increase crude output to 1.245 million barrels per day by the end of August.

Venezuela is exporting more than 500,000 barrels per day of oil to the United States, as stated by U.S. Under Secretary of Energy Kyle Haustveit during an industry event in Houston. This export accounts for about half of Venezuela’s total oil production, which is approximately 1.25 million barrels per day. Venezuela, which possesses the world’s largest proven oil reserves of an estimated 303 billion barrels, has seen its oil output increase significantly this year, with exports rising by 19.7 percent. Jovanny Martinez, a vice president at the state oil company Petróleos de Venezuela, S.A. (PDVSA), indicated that the country is focused on energy reform and aims to further enhance its oil production and refinery capabilities.

Why It Matters

The increase in Venezuelan oil exports to the United States follows a significant political shift, with the U.S. having installed an interim government in Caracas after the removal of President Nicolás Maduro. Venezuela’s oil industry has faced decades of underinvestment and sanctions, leading to a drastic reduction in its global oil supply contribution. The current arrangement benefits U.S. refineries designed for heavy, sour crude, while also facilitating U.S. support for Venezuelan production through the provision of naphtha. This partnership reflects a complex interplay of geopolitical interests and energy needs between the two nations.
