Syrian court sentences Assad’s cousin to death for crimes against humanity

A Syrian court has sentenced Wassim al-Assad, a cousin of former President Bashar al-Assad, to death for crimes against humanity. The ruling was issued by Damascus’ Fourth Criminal Court, which also mandated the confiscation of Wassim’s assets for state treasury purposes. His charges included operating irregular armed groups since early 2011, under the orders of Brig. Gen. Ghiath Dalla, and participating in military operations that targeted civilian areas in Eastern Ghouta, resulting in numerous civilian casualties. Additionally, Wassim was charged with drug trafficking and premeditated murder. He was arrested on June 21, 2025, near the Syrian-Lebanese border, and his trial commenced shortly thereafter. Recently, Bashar al-Assad and his brother Maher were sentenced to death in absentia for similar crimes, following their flight from Syria amid ongoing conflict.

Why It Matters

This ruling reflects the Syrian judiciary’s increasing accountability efforts against members of the former regime, which has faced widespread allegations of human rights violations during the civil war that began in 2011. Wassim al-Assad’s conviction is part of a broader trend in which high-ranking officials are being prosecuted for their roles in the conflict, which has resulted in hundreds of thousands of deaths and millions of displaced persons. The sentencing of the Assad family members signifies a potential shift in governance and justice in post-conflict Syria, particularly after the Baath Party’s prolonged control and Bashar al-Assad’s departure from power in December 2024.
