Strait of Hormuz traffic rises from weekend levels

Ship traffic through the Strait of Hormuz remained low on Monday, with only six commodity vessels making the crossing, according to preliminary data. This figure, comprising three ships entering and three exiting the Gulf, is below the 10-day average of 11 ships per day. Over the weekend, the number of vessels transiting the strait sharply declined, with just three ships on Saturday and none on Sunday, a significant drop from 31 crossings the previous weekend. Notably, no very large crude carriers or liquefied natural gas tankers were reported in transit, and some vessels may have passed through with their transponders turned off, which would not be included in the official tally. The slowdown in shipping activity comes amid stalled peace talks between the U.S. and Iran, contributing to heightened tensions in the region.

Why It Matters

The Strait of Hormuz is a critical chokepoint for global oil and gas shipments, with approximately 20% of the world’s oil passing through it. Recent attacks on tankers have raised security concerns, prompting significant fluctuations in shipping activity. The ongoing stalemate in U.S.-Iran negotiations exacerbates these tensions, potentially impacting energy markets and geopolitical stability. With continued unrest, the region’s shipping lanes remain vulnerable, which could affect global supply chains and pricing for energy resources.
