Colombian singer Shakira announced her commitment to help construct at least 10 new schools in the Chocó region of Colombia, which was severely impacted by a 7.4 magnitude earthquake last week. The disaster has resulted in at least 287 fatalities and left thousands of educational facilities damaged. During her visit to Quibdó, the provincial capital, Shakira expressed concern over the long-term educational repercussions of the earthquake, stating, “Every day that children don’t go to school is a day they miss out on their future.” Shakira’s initiative will be supported by the Howard G. Buffett Foundation, with an additional $1 million pledged from organizations including Global Citizen and Live Nation. The earthquake has particularly devastated Chocó, a region characterized by high poverty rates and significant infrastructure challenges, complicating aid efforts.

Why It Matters

The earthquake in western Colombia not only resulted in significant loss of life but also severely disrupted educational opportunities in an area where many residents already face socio-economic hardships. Chocó is one of Colombia’s poorest provinces, with most of its 600,000 inhabitants living in poverty. The region’s infrastructure is limited, making it difficult for aid organizations to reach affected communities. Shakira’s commitment to rebuild schools is part of a broader effort by various Colombian artists and organizations to address the urgent needs following the disaster, highlighting the critical role of community and cultural figures in disaster recovery and educational access in impoverished regions.
