Professor reports students at elite universities struggle with basic math

A mathematics professor at Berkeley has raised concerns about the preparedness of incoming students at the University of California (UC) due to the system’s “test-blind” admissions policy. Professor Zvezdelina Stankova highlighted that many students are significantly behind in their math skills, with some lacking knowledge expected at the middle school level. Following the UC’s decision in 2020 to eliminate standardized testing like the SAT and ACT, Stankova reported a decline in math readiness among students, with the percentage of those deemed ready for Calculus I dropping from 71% to 51% between 2018 and 2023. In response, Stankova and numerous faculty members have signed open letters advocating for the reinstatement of standardized tests, arguing that the elimination of these assessments has hindered the ability to gauge academic readiness and support students effectively.

Why It Matters

The decline in student preparedness at UC reflects broader trends in higher education where standardized testing is increasingly being challenged or eliminated. Historical data shows that standardized tests provided a consistent measure of academic readiness across diverse educational backgrounds, which can help identify gaps in knowledge. The ongoing debate over the role of standardized testing in college admissions continues to influence admissions policies across the United States, as institutions grapple with balancing equity concerns with the need to ensure students are adequately prepared for rigorous academic challenges.
