Cape May implements beach curfew for minors due to underage drinking concerns

A new ordinance in Cape May, New Jersey, prohibits unaccompanied minors from being on the beach after 8 p.m. and in public spaces between 10:30 p.m. and 6 a.m. This measure, approved unanimously by the City Council, aims to address concerns over underage drinking and disruptive behavior. Alongside the curfew, the Cape May Police Department has banned backpacks and certain bags on the beach and promenade after 8 p.m., with exceptions for medical equipment. The ordinance is part of a broader effort to prevent large youth gatherings that have caused disturbances in other Jersey Shore towns. Cape May Mayor Zachary Mullock emphasized the need for these measures to maintain safety and ensure families can enjoy the beach community.

Why It Matters

Cape May’s new restrictions reflect a growing trend among Jersey Shore towns to combat issues related to youth gatherings, particularly underage drinking and public disturbances. Similar curfews have been enacted in areas like Ocean City and Long Branch, where recent incidents highlighted safety concerns. Long Branch faced significant disruptions during unauthorized teen gatherings, prompting officials to restore order with a curfew. These measures are being implemented to enhance community safety and preserve the family-friendly atmosphere that beach towns aim to maintain during the busy summer season.
