Shipping in Strait of Hormuz declines amid US-Iran tensions

Shipping traffic through the Strait of Hormuz has declined below the monthly average as tensions rise between the United States and Iran. The head of Iran’s Basij paramilitary unit asserted on Thursday that Iran has control over the strait, while the U.S. indicated it could maintain a naval blockade of Iran indefinitely and increase economic pressure. On Thursday, nine vessels transited the strait, a slight increase from five the previous day, but still lower than the average of 12 for August. Amid this backdrop, two vessels belonging to the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company were reportedly attacked while passing through the strait, with the UAE attributing the attack to Iran. Despite these incidents, 19 vessels transited the Bab el-Mandeb strait, showing stability in that region.

Why It Matters

The Strait of Hormuz is a critical maritime route, with approximately 20% of the world’s oil passing through it. The ongoing geopolitical tensions between the U.S. and Iran have significant implications for global oil supply and safety in shipping lanes. Past incidents in the strait have led to increased military presence and heightened international scrutiny, affecting oil prices and market stability. The strait’s security is vital for the economies of many countries reliant on energy exports, making the situation a focal point of international relations in the region.
