Spotify Labels AI Creators Posing as Human Artists

What You Need to Know
• Spotify will begin labeling AI profiles posing as human artists with “AI Persona” badges in mid-September.
• The badges will appear on artist profile pages, search results, and playlist track listings.
• Creators can disclose AI usage for their public persona, while AI Personas will be excluded from Spotify’s recommendation features.

Spotify Technology S.A. announced that it will start labeling artificial intelligence profiles that impersonate human artists with “AI Persona” badges, beginning in mid-September. These badges will be visible on artist profile pages, in search results, and within playlist track listings. The company stated that while artists may use AI creatively, it is important to clarify whether a profile represents a real person. Starting this week, creators can self-disclose their use of AI for their public persona, separate from music creation. Additionally, Spotify will independently review artist profiles to enforce this new policy, and any music uploaded by AI Personas will not be included in Spotify’s recommendation features.

Why It Matters

This initiative by Spotify reflects the growing intersection of artificial intelligence and the music industry, as the platform seeks to maintain transparency regarding artist identities. By implementing the “AI Persona” badge, Spotify aims to help listeners distinguish between human artists and AI-generated profiles. This move comes amid increasing concerns about the authenticity of online content and the role of AI in creative industries. The decision to exclude AI-generated content from recommendation features underscores Spotify’s commitment to preserving the integrity of its music curation process.
