Iran modifies tactics in attacks on US bases in the Middle East

As the conflict between the US and Iran escalates, Iran has modified its tactics, launching drone and missile attacks on US military bases in the Middle East. In June, Iranian forces targeted three bases in Jordan, utilizing missiles that could change direction to bypass US air defenses, which led to the US deploying its limited supply of Patriot interceptors. A significant incident occurred on July 17 when an Iranian attack on a US base in Jordan resulted in the deaths of three soldiers. The US Central Command confirmed the casualties and reported one service member missing. As the war continues, the US faces a depletion of its missile stockpile, with fewer than 1,700 Patriot interceptors remaining, and the Army’s long-range missile inventory nearly exhausted.

Why It Matters

The ongoing conflict highlights the evolving nature of military engagements and the strategic challenges faced by the US military. The US has utilized approximately 65% of its Patriot interceptors since February, which raises concerns about its defensive capabilities in the region. Moreover, the depletion of munitions not only affects the US-Iran conflict but also impacts global military readiness, as evidenced by the shortage of Army Tactical Missile Systems that are also critical for Ukraine. This situation underscores the interconnectedness of modern military conflicts and the logistical challenges nations face in sustaining military operations over extended periods.
