Feds launch $100 million program to subsidize steel shipping in Canada

The Canadian federal government is investing $100 million into the steel industry through the new Commodities Sectoral Support Program, which will reimburse companies for half of their transportation costs when moving Canadian-made steel by ship or rail. Transport Minister Steven MacKinnon announced the initiative in Hamilton, emphasizing its importance in light of U.S. tariffs ranging from 10 to 50 percent on Canadian steel, aluminum, and copper products. The rebate program, effective immediately, allows a single producer to claim up to $50 million and will run for one year or until the funding is exhausted. MacKinnon indicated that adjustments could be made if the program runs out of funds before the year is complete. Industry leaders, including Ron Bedard from ArcelorMittal Dofasco, expressed optimism about the positive impact this initiative will have across all Canadian provinces.

Why It Matters

This initiative comes as a direct response to increasing U.S. tariffs that threaten the competitiveness of Canadian steel products in the international market. By subsidizing transportation costs, the Canadian government aims to support domestic producers and maintain the integrity of the supply chain within the country. Historically, the steel industry has been a crucial part of Canada’s economy, contributing significantly to employment and manufacturing. The program reflects broader efforts by the Canadian government to enhance economic stability and resilience against external trade pressures, particularly from the United States.
