Israeli army conducts attacks in Lebanon amid ongoing truce

The Israeli army conducted bombing and artillery shelling in southern Lebanon on Monday, violating a truce that had been recently established. Israeli forces targeted Wadi al-Salouqi in the Nabatieh governorate with machine gun fire and shelled the town of Mansouri overnight, according to Lebanon’s National News Agency. Additional bombings occurred in Kfar Tebnit, and intermittent artillery fire affected the outskirts of Nabatieh al-Fawqa. There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage. These military actions follow the seventh round of US-brokered negotiations between Lebanon and Israel that concluded in Rome, which focused on implementing a framework agreement aimed at addressing border disputes and the disarmament of armed groups such as Hezbollah. Despite claims of positive progress in negotiations, the ongoing Israeli offensive has resulted in significant casualties and displacement since March 2.

Why It Matters

The continued hostilities between Israel and Lebanon represent a complex and long-standing conflict rooted in territorial disputes and regional power dynamics. The framework agreement, signed on June 26, outlines a phased Israeli withdrawal from occupied Lebanese territory, contingent upon the deployment of the Lebanese army and the disarmament of Hezbollah. Since the escalation of violence, over 4,300 people have reportedly died, and more than a million have been displaced, underscoring the humanitarian impact of the conflict. The backdrop of US mediation highlights international efforts to stabilize the region, despite persistent military actions that undermine diplomatic progress.
