Italian divers have uncovered a 2,100-year-old Roman shipwreck off the coast of Mazara del Vallo, Sicily, revealing a cargo of hundreds of ancient clay jars, or amphorae, believed to have been used for transporting wine. The wreck, located approximately three miles from shore at a depth of 150 feet, dates back to between the 2nd and 1st centuries BC, according to Italy’s Culture Minister Alessandro Giuli, who called it “one of the most important underwater archaeological discoveries of recent years.” The discovery was made after local fishermen reported an unusual sighting to divers from Palermo’s cultural heritage protection unit. One diver, Giacomo De Mola, described the moment he found the amphorae as “the most incredible discovery of my life,” sharing video footage of the site. The shipwreck is reported to measure about 21 meters long and 6 meters wide, primarily containing Dressel 1A amphorae, which were commonly used in antiquity for wine transport.

Why It Matters

The discovery of the Roman shipwreck is significant as it provides valuable insights into ancient maritime trade and the cultural practices of the Roman Empire. Amphorae were essential for the storage and transportation of goods, particularly wine, which was a vital commodity in Roman society. This find contributes to the understanding of shipping routes and trade practices in the Mediterranean during the late Roman Republic. Moreover, it enhances the archaeological record of the region, highlighting the importance of underwater archaeology in uncovering historical narratives that have long been submerged and forgotten.
