Iran continues executions amid ongoing conflict

Iran executed at least 71 individuals in July, including six protesters, as reported by Iran Human Rights (IHR), a Norway-based monitoring organization. From January to July 2023, IHR documented a total of 444 executions, with only 67 confirmed by Iranian authorities. The ongoing military tensions between Iran, the United States, and Israel have overshadowed reports of domestic executions and human rights violations. Mahmood Amiry-Moghaddam, director of IHR, stated that executions are occurring at an almost daily rate, primarily for drug-related offenses and murder, while also noting that many more individuals are on death row. Of the 71 executions in July, 36 were for murder, 26 for drug offenses, and eight for security-related charges.

Why It Matters

The high rate of executions in Iran reflects the government’s continued use of capital punishment as a tool for suppressing dissent and maintaining control. Historical data shows that executions in Iran often target political activists and individuals accused of security-related offenses. The Iranian regime justifies these actions as necessary for national security, particularly in the context of ongoing geopolitical tensions. The international community’s focus on military issues can lead to a diminished awareness of human rights violations within Iran, complicating advocacy for change and accountability.
