Approximately 20 bottles of a rare 1864 Guinness stout were discovered in a shipwreck off the coast of Dover, sparking scientific interest in recreating the original recipe. The bottles, found by Belgian underwater photographer Stefan Panis, were well-preserved due to high pressure conditions underwater. The ship, Mindora, sank shortly after departing from London for Vancouver. Panis has reached out to Guinness about the find and believes there may be more bottles still buried at the site. Samples have been sent to KU Leuven University in Belgium for analysis, with scientists hopeful that they can recover enough DNA to replicate the beer’s flavor from the Victorian era.

Why It Matters

The discovery of the Guinness bottles provides a unique insight into brewing history and the preservation of food and beverage products through time. The Mindora’s cargo, which has remained untouched for over 160 years, offers a rare opportunity to study historical brewing practices. This find could not only shed light on the techniques used in the mid-19th century but also allow researchers to explore the impact of environmental factors on the aging process of beer. Such historical insights contribute to a deeper understanding of culinary heritage and the evolution of popular beverages like Guinness.
