Eskom has partnered with community leaders in Khayelitsha to create a multi-stakeholder task team aimed at enhancing electricity service delivery and addressing infrastructure vandalism. This initiative follows a leadership meeting on July 14, 2023, between Eskom, local councillors, and the Khayelitsha Development Forum, as the utility seeks to manage a significant backlog of electricity faults. In just one week, Eskom has completed over 1,000 work orders, reducing the outstanding fault backlog from approximately 6,400 to 5,000. The task team will focus on key areas including electrification, infrastructure protection, customer service, and illegal connections. Eskom aims to finish its recovery efforts by September 30, 2023, with additional technical teams and security personnel deployed to expedite repairs and safeguard infrastructure.
Why It Matters
This collaboration is crucial as Khayelitsha has over 115,000 registered electricity customers, with the existing network under pressure from ongoing population growth. Infrastructure vandalism and illegal connections have exacerbated power outages and safety risks for residents and workers alike. Previous efforts to improve service reliability have been hampered by these issues, making this task team’s establishment a significant step toward sustainable electricity delivery. Strengthening relations with community stakeholders is essential for Eskom to bolster its operations and meet the increasing demand for electricity in the area.
