What You Need to Know
• The Food and Drug Administration approved Moderna’s mFlusiva, the first mRNA flu vaccine in the U.S.
• mFlusiva is 27% more effective than traditional flu shots and is approved for adults aged 50 and older.
• Moderna’s mRNA flu vaccine can be produced in two to three months, compared to six months for traditional vaccines.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Moderna’s mFlusiva on Wednesday, marking the first flu vaccine in the United States to utilize mRNA technology. The FDA granted approval for adults aged 50 to 65 and those 65 and older, contingent upon Moderna conducting an additional clinical trial for the older demographic. In clinical trials, mFlusiva demonstrated approximately 27% greater effectiveness than standard flu vaccines. The mRNA platform allows for faster production, enabling Moderna to roll out its vaccine within two to three months after selecting the influenza strain, as opposed to the six months typically required for traditional vaccines. This advancement comes amid ongoing discussions about the efficacy of flu vaccines, which have historically ranged from 22% to 56% in effectiveness.

Why It Matters

The approval of mFlusiva is significant as it introduces a new technology to combat seasonal influenza, which annually results in hundreds of thousands of hospitalizations and tens of thousands of deaths in the United States. The traditional flu vaccine’s effectiveness has been limited, prompting interest in mRNA technology, which has shown promise during the COVID-19 pandemic. The FDA’s decision follows a unanimous recommendation from its independent vaccine advisory committee in June, reflecting a growing acceptance of mRNA vaccines in public health. Additionally, this approval may influence future vaccine development strategies, particularly in addressing rapidly evolving viral strains.
