Record-low Danube River levels threaten Hungary’s nuclear power plant operations

As the Danube River experiences record low water levels, Hungary faces an energy crisis as its sole nuclear power plant, Paks, is at risk of shutting down. Currently, three of its four reactors are offline, with the remaining reactor operating at half capacity. The Paks plant, which generates about 50% of Hungary’s electricity, relies on water from the Danube, making it vulnerable amid the ongoing drought affecting southeast Europe. Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar has urged citizens to conserve energy while the government has increased electricity imports to compensate for the loss in local generation. With no significant rainfall expected in the coming days and high temperatures forecasted, the situation remains critical for Hungary’s energy supply.

Why It Matters

This situation highlights Hungary’s reliance on a single energy source and the vulnerabilities associated with climate change, as Europe is warming faster than the global average. The Paks nuclear facility, built in the 1980s, was designed to draw directly from the Danube, which historically was considered a reliable water source. The current drought, lasting over three months, exemplifies the growing impact of climate-related issues on energy infrastructure. Additionally, Hungary’s interconnected electricity network allows for regional imports, but the long-term sustainability of this approach may be questioned as climate challenges intensify.
