Tennessee sophomore offensive lineman David Sanders Jr. is set to enter his second season with the Volunteers as they prepare for fall training camp, which begins Wednesday. Head coach Josh Heupel praised Sanders for his comfort at the left tackle position, noting that he made significant physical gains during the offseason. Last year, Sanders played nine games and started six at right tackle, accumulating 480 offensive snaps. The 6-foot-6, 310-pound lineman is expected to continue developing this season. Tennessee will kick off the 2026 football season on September 5 against Furman at Neyland Stadium, and the team is currently ranked No. 18 in the preseason US LBM Coaches Poll.

Why It Matters

David Sanders Jr.’s development is crucial for Tennessee’s offensive line stability as the team looks to improve on its performance from the previous season. In 2025, the Volunteers experienced growth with young talent, and Sanders’ transition from right tackle to left tackle could enhance the team’s offensive capabilities. The upcoming season opener against Furman presents an opportunity for Sanders to showcase his progress and for the team to build on last year’s experience. Maintaining a strong offensive line is essential for any football program aiming for success in a competitive conference like the SEC.
