Aussie motorists advised to shop smarter as fuel prices reach $2 per litre

Aussie motorists are being advised to “shop smarter” as the Albanese government has ended its temporary fuel excise relief, resulting in petrol prices rising to nearly $2 per litre. The government previously implemented a 32 cent per litre cut in excise in April, which had been reduced to 16 cents by the end of June, but these discounts lapsed on August 2. The NRMA reported that fuel prices had been increasing steadily ahead of the expiry, with regular unleaded expected to reach 201.5 cents per litre and diesel at $2.43. The Treasurer, Jim Chalmers, noted that the excise measure was never meant to be permanent and that the government is taking steps to monitor fuel prices closely as tensions in the Middle East continue to affect global supply. Recent data shows that prices have risen significantly across various Australian states, with Adelaide experiencing notable increases.

Why It Matters

The decision to end the fuel excise relief comes amid ongoing global tensions, particularly in the Middle East, which have historically influenced oil prices. Prior to the introduction of the excise relief in March, petrol prices were significantly higher, with regular unleaded at over 250 cents per litre and diesel even higher. The current price increases reflect a broader trend of rising fuel costs, exacerbated by supply chain disruptions and geopolitical conflicts. Australia has enhanced monitoring of fuel prices to prevent retailers from taking advantage of the situation, indicating a governmental effort to mitigate the impact of rising costs on consumers.
