Falling rocks damage vehicles after earthquake in Italian city

Eight people were injured and numerous vehicles were damaged when a 4.7 magnitude earthquake struck the Campi Flegrei region near Naples, Italy, on Friday night. The quake occurred at a shallow depth of 3 kilometers at approximately 7:46 PM and was followed by multiple aftershocks throughout the night. Large boulders dislodged from cliffs fell into residential streets, crushing parked cars and prompting residents to evacuate their homes amid clouds of dust. Emergency services responded to the scene, while power outages and transportation disruptions were reported. Minor damage to buildings in Naples and surrounding areas has also been confirmed, as the region has experienced increased seismic activity in recent years.

Why It Matters

Italy is no stranger to earthquakes, with a history of seismic events that have caused significant destruction and loss of life. The area affected by this earthquake, Campi Flegrei, is a volcanic region known for its geological instability. In 2016, a series of earthquakes in central Italy resulted in substantial damage and approximately 300 fatalities. The most devastating event in recent history occurred in 1980, when a 6.9 magnitude quake in the Irpinia region led to around 2,700 deaths. Given the recurring nature of such seismic activities, the recent quake highlights ongoing concerns regarding earthquake preparedness and infrastructure resilience in Italy.
