What You Need to Know
• The Italian health ministry announced that 25 of Italy’s 27 major cities will be on red alert by Monday.
• Only Reggio Calabria and Messina will be on the second-highest amber alert level during the heatwave.
• A subtropical anticyclone from North Africa is causing extreme heat across the Mediterranean region.

The Italian health ministry, in its latest heatwave bulletin published on Saturday, stated that by Monday, 25 of the country’s 27 major cities will be under a red alert due to extreme heat. The only exceptions are Reggio Calabria, located at the southern tip of Italy, and Messina, situated on the island of Sicily, which will be on an amber alert. Residents in these areas are advised to avoid sun exposure and stay indoors during peak heat hours from 11:00 to 18:00, while ensuring adequate hydration. The extreme temperatures are attributed to a strengthening subtropical anticyclone originating from North Africa. Concurrently, firefighters in Greece, France, Portugal, and Spain are battling wildfires affecting thousands of hectares of land.

Why It Matters

This situation highlights the growing impact of climate change, as extreme weather events become more frequent and severe. The Italian health ministry’s warnings reflect public health concerns related to heat exposure, particularly for vulnerable populations. Additionally, the ongoing wildfires in Southern Europe underscore the challenges posed by rising temperatures, which can exacerbate fire risks and threaten ecosystems. Historical data indicates that heatwaves have become more intense in recent years, emphasizing the need for effective climate adaptation strategies.
