Former advisor to Iran’s Supreme Leader issues threats to Israel and Gulf states

Mohammad Marandi, a close adviser to the Iranian regime and former aide to Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, issued a warning that Gulf states and Israel could face severe retaliation if Iran’s civilian infrastructure is attacked. He indicated that the current tensions, heightened by threats from the Trump administration, could lead to a dramatic escalation, suggesting that countries like Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE should prepare for potential destruction of their critical infrastructure. In contrast, an Israeli official stated that Israel is not aware of any decision to resume military operations against Iran. Meanwhile, U.S. military officials expressed concern over a lack of naval resources to defend Israel, noting that the U.S. Navy is already strained due to ongoing operations, including a blockade of Iranian ports. The U.S. Embassy has advised American citizens in the region to consider leaving due to rising tensions, echoing similar warnings from embassies in surrounding countries.

Why It Matters

This situation is significant as it underscores the heightened military tensions in the Middle East, particularly between Iran and its regional adversaries, including Israel and Gulf states. The U.S. military’s limitations in naval capacity highlight vulnerabilities in its defense strategy, particularly in safeguarding allies against Iranian missile threats. The ongoing blockade of Iranian ports has contributed to regional instability, affecting global oil supply and economic conditions. The warnings from both Iranian and U.S. officials reflect the precarious balance of power in the region, which could lead to further military confrontations if diplomatic efforts fail.
