FIFA president rejects private equity investment in World Cup stakes

The president of FIFA, Gianni Infantino, announced the cancellation of a controversial plan to sell stakes in the World Cup to private equity investors. The proposal aimed to create a new commercial subsidiary valued at $20 billion, but faced opposition from soccer organizations in Asia, Europe, and North America, with Europe’s soccer body threatening to withdraw from FIFA competitions. Infantino initially defended the plan, asserting that it would not equate to selling football, but later acknowledged that the initiative had caused divisions that went against FIFA’s objectives of unity. The plan, known as FIFA Forward Enterprise, resulted in the resignation of senior adviser Carlos Cordeiro, who expressed his disapproval of selling a stake in the World Cup. Infantino emphasized his commitment to bringing stakeholders together to support the growth of soccer globally, especially in underrepresented regions.

Why It Matters

This decision highlights the tension within FIFA and its member organizations regarding the commercialization of soccer. The proposal to sell World Cup stakes raised concerns about the integrity and accessibility of the sport, particularly among smaller federations. Historically, FIFA has faced scrutiny over its governance and financial practices, and this incident reflects ongoing debates about the balance between profit and the sport’s foundational values. The withdrawal of support from major soccer bodies underscores the importance of consensus in the governance of international soccer.
