Israeli defense minister reports government approved 104 West Bank settlements since 2022

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz announced that the government has approved the establishment of 104 new settlements and approximately 160 settlement farms in the occupied West Bank since November 2022. During a meeting with Likud party leaders, Katz emphasized that these decisions reflect a commitment to strengthen Israel’s control over the region, known as Judea and Samaria in Israeli terminology. This announcement follows a notable increase in the establishment of settlement outposts, which often lack official government authorization but can later become legalized. According to the Israeli settlement watchdog Peace Now, there are currently 141 settlements and 360 outposts in the West Bank and 15 in East Jerusalem. The international community, including the UN, has deemed these settlements illegal under international law, citing UN Security Council Resolution 2334, which states they have no legal validity.

Why It Matters

The expansion of Israeli settlements in the West Bank has significant implications for the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, as it complicates the possibility of a two-state solution. Historically, the establishment of settlements is seen as a violation of international law, which has been consistently reaffirmed by various international bodies. The ongoing settlement activities, coupled with reported violence against Palestinians, contribute to rising tensions in the region. As of mid-2026, there have been thousands of reported attacks on Palestinians and their properties, raising concerns among human rights groups about the Israeli military’s role in these incidents and the broader impact on peace negotiations.
