Thousands of unaccompanied migrant children may lose legal representation this week

Thousands of unaccompanied migrant children may soon lose their legal representation as the federal government contract for nonprofit organizations expires on July 31. Advocates and immigration lawyers highlight that the administration has withheld $65 million in overdue fees, which they argue is an attempt to force organizations to surrender confidential information about the minors they represent. Acacia Center for Justice, which oversees more than 100 service providers for the Unaccompanied Children Program, became the prime contract holder in December 2023. Legal service providers have filed an emergency motion in federal court to compel the government to resume payments for necessary legal services. Without these funds, many organizations are facing staff cuts and may be unable to take on new cases, risking the legal representation of over 20,000 unaccompanied minors.

Why It Matters

The situation underscores the critical role that legal representation plays for unaccompanied migrant children in the U.S. Historically, these minors have faced heightened risks of deportation when unrepresented in court. Legal service providers have reported being targeted during immigration crackdowns, which has intensified the challenges in providing adequate support. The withholding of funds and data demands from the Office of Refugee Resettlement may further jeopardize these services, threatening to dismantle decades of accumulated expertise and advocacy for vulnerable populations.
