Lacrosse players disqualified from Ontario championships due to residency policy

Seven players from the St. Catharines Athletics U17 box lacrosse team have been declared ineligible to compete in the provincial championships due to residential boundary policies enforced by the Ontario Lacrosse Association (OLA). Four of the players belong to the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, while three are non-Indigenous U.S. citizens, and they were informed of their ineligibility just after qualifying for the Final Six Championship. Dotgahdöh (Ezra) Nephew, a player from New York’s Seneca Nation, expressed disappointment over the decision, particularly as this season marks his final year in minor lacrosse. His father, who serves as the team’s assistant coach, criticized the OLA for not communicating these residency requirements earlier in the season. The OLA’s policy aims to ensure competitive balance within local communities, but the affected players and their families argue that this decision overlooks the unique cultural significance of lacrosse for the Haudenosaunee people.

Why It Matters

This situation highlights ongoing challenges regarding Indigenous participation in sports governed by non-Indigenous organizations. The Haudenosaunee Confederacy has a rich history and cultural connection to lacrosse, often referred to as “The Creator’s Game.” The OLA’s residential boundary policy, intended to maintain local competitive integrity, raises questions about inclusivity and recognition of Indigenous rights in sports. The lack of prior communication about eligibility requirements also sheds light on systemic issues within sports governance that can impact players from marginalized communities.
