Somalia Opposition Outlines Strategies to Prevent an Afghanistan-Like Crisis

Somalia’s opposition coalition, led by the Somali Future Council (SFC), is advocating for a transitional period under an inclusive council to prevent political instability similar to that experienced in Afghanistan following the U.S. troop withdrawal in 2021. The coalition seeks a political settlement that restores legitimacy and national consensus while ensuring the neutrality of state institutions, including the Somali National Army. Their proposal has been communicated to countries contributing troops to the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia. President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, who has faced criticism for controversial constitutional amendments extending his term, argues for direct elections in 2024. However, opponents believe the current security situation in Somalia necessitates indirect polls. Ongoing diplomatic negotiations have yet to yield a viable agreement, raising concerns about potential chaos as U.S. support for UN logistical operations is set to expire in 2026.

Why It Matters

The situation in Somalia is significant due to its history of political instability and the ongoing threat of violence from armed groups. The 2021 U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan serves as a cautionary tale for Somalia, where the absence of international support could lead to a power vacuum and further conflict. Somalia has struggled with governance issues, including the legitimacy of its political processes and the effectiveness of its security forces. The potential collapse of the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission could exacerbate these challenges, putting the nation at risk of descending into chaos and undermining progress made in rebuilding its institutions.
