Gaza hospital director warns of escalating humanitarian and health crisis

Dr. Mohammad Abu Salmiya, director of Al-Shifa Medical Complex in Gaza, has warned that approximately 1.6 million residents face the threat of famine and malnutrition amid an ongoing humanitarian crisis. He highlighted that 74,000 children are experiencing varying degrees of malnutrition and 25,000 pregnant women are at risk of severe anemia. The healthcare system in Gaza is under severe strain due to rising malnutrition rates, infectious diseases, and critical shortages of medicines and supplies. Hospitals are overwhelmed, receiving numerous casualties daily, including children requiring amputations, while around 70% of ambulances are out of service, hampering patient transport. Abu Salmiya also noted that about 4,000 cancer patients are unable to receive treatment, leading to daily fatalities among this group, and he urged for urgent international intervention to facilitate the entry of essential medical aid into Gaza.

Why It Matters

The humanitarian crisis in Gaza has roots in a long-standing conflict, exacerbated by blockades and military actions that have severely restricted access to essential goods, including medical supplies. Recent escalations have led to increased injuries and deaths, placing immense pressure on healthcare resources. The World Health Organization has reported that health infrastructure in Gaza is critically damaged, and the ongoing shortages of basic medical supplies have dire implications for public health. The situation calls for immediate international attention to address the escalating health crisis and prevent further loss of life among vulnerable populations.
