eSafety sues Telegram over pro-terrorist videos

Australia’s eSafety watchdog has initiated civil proceedings against Telegram in the Federal Court over its failure to remove pro-terrorist content from its platform. The complaint states that Telegram did not adequately detect or eliminate videos depicting terrorist acts, including executions and mass shootings, despite being informed by Australian users. eSafety Commissioner Julie Inman Grant indicated that some of this material remained accessible for up to three weeks after Telegram was notified. The case arises from a year-long investigation into Telegram’s compliance with Australian online safety regulations, which mandate that digital platforms act to prevent the spread of unlawful content. Failure to adhere to these regulations could result in penalties reaching $54.6 million.

Why It Matters

This legal action underscores the broader issue of digital platforms’ responsibility in managing harmful content online. eSafety’s investigation highlights the risks associated with extremist material, particularly in light of recent terror attacks in Australia. With a user base exceeding one billion worldwide, Telegram’s practices have significant implications for online safety and security. As Australia continues to face a probable terrorism threat level, the case serves as a critical test of how effectively digital services can uphold community safety standards in compliance with national laws.
