Driverless pods may replace cars on Hammersmith Bridge

A non-profit organization, Barnes and Hammersmith Electric Light Transit (BHELT), proposes to introduce driverless electric pods as a transport solution for Hammersmith Bridge, which has been closed to vehicles since 2019 due to structural issues. The bridge, a 138-year-old landmark, may remain inaccessible for cars and lorries for an extended period, with officials suggesting significant repairs could be necessary. The proposed Ohmio AV Shuttle pods would operate on fixed routes using artificial intelligence and have space for up to 14 passengers, including wheelchair access. These lightweight vehicles, weighing less than three tonnes, can navigate obstacles autonomously, allowing them to safely cross the bridge while minimizing stress on its structure.

Why It Matters

Hammersmith Bridge has been a vital transportation link in London since its construction in 1887. Its closure has significantly impacted local travel and prompted discussions about innovative transport solutions. The introduction of autonomous pods reflects a growing trend toward using technology to address urban transport challenges, particularly in areas facing infrastructure limitations. The proposal could pave the way for new forms of public transport that prioritize safety and efficiency while addressing the needs of communities affected by longstanding transportation hurdles.
