Two Democrats Advance to Runoff in Georgia Special Election

Marcye Scott, the daughter of the late Congressman David Scott, and fellow Democrat Everton Blair advanced to a runoff in the Georgia special election to fill the remainder of David Scott’s term in the House. The special primary election for Georgia’s 13th District featured five candidates, but since no candidate secured a majority, a runoff is necessary. With approximately 80% of votes counted, Marcye Scott led with 47% while Blair followed with 37%. David Scott passed away on April 22, prompting this special election for the seat he held for two decades, during which he consistently received strong voter support, including 72% in his last election. Voters in the district have already cast ballots in a separate primary for the next full congressional term, which Jasmine Clark won shortly after David Scott’s death.

Why It Matters

The outcome of this special election is significant as it will determine who represents Georgia’s 13th District in the House for the remaining months of 2026. David Scott held the seat for 20 years, indicating strong Democratic support in a solid-blue district that encompasses parts of metro Atlanta. The election follows a recent primary for a new full term, highlighting ongoing political dynamics in the region. The results may also influence future elections and party strategies in a district that has historically leaned Democratic.
