Scientists warn of potential invasive species spread near Strait of Hormuz

A potential ecological disaster looms as ships remain stalled in the Strait of Hormuz due to ongoing conflict, scientists warn. The Strait is a vital maritime corridor, facilitating approximately 20% of the world’s oil supply, and has faced disruptions since the outbreak of hostilities with Iran in February. Iran’s actions have significantly reduced tanker traffic, leaving over 1,500 vessels idle in the Persian Gulf and hundreds more in the Gulf of Oman. Researchers suggest that prolonged inactivity of these ships may result in a “super-spreader” event for invasive species, as marine organisms can attach themselves to the vessels and be transported to different ecosystems. This biofouling poses a risk to native biodiversity and can lead to significant economic impacts, particularly on fisheries and aquaculture.

Why It Matters

The Strait of Hormuz has historically been a geopolitically sensitive area, crucial for global oil transportation. With the current blockade and heightened tensions, the ecological ramifications of stagnant shipping traffic could have long-lasting effects on marine environments. Invasive species, once introduced to new habitats, can disrupt local ecosystems and are notoriously difficult to eradicate. The current situation exacerbates existing challenges as the region’s warm waters and unique ecological conditions may enhance the survivability of these invasive organisms, increasing the likelihood of widespread ecological disruption.
