One man cares for 113 campus stray cats each morning

Patrick Lupuzi has been caring for the 113 feral cats at the University of the Western Cape (UWC) every weekday since 2017. His routine begins before sunrise, lasting about five hours, during which he feeds the cats, cleans their bowls, and checks for any signs of illness. Lupuzi, who initially preferred dogs, has developed a strong bond with the cats, to the extent that they now recognize him and trust him completely. His daily rounds across the campus include 34 feeding stations, where he ensures the cats are healthy and well-fed. In addition to the cats, Lupuzi also attends to a stray dog named Meisiehond, who has become part of the campus community since wandering in three years ago.

Why It Matters

The UWC Feral Cat Project, initiated in 1997, aims to provide consistent care for feral cats, including food, veterinary treatment, and sterilization through a trap-neuter-return program. This initiative addresses the issue of feral cat populations on university campuses, promoting humane treatment and management. Lupuzi’s commitment underscores the importance of animal welfare in educational environments, highlighting how compassionate care can foster trust and improve the lives of both animals and their caretakers. The project has adapted to changing needs over the years, reflecting broader societal attitudes toward animal rights and welfare.
